Rendición de cuentas de Daniel Ortega y Rosario Murillo tras la salida de la OEA
Hoy ha entrado en vigor la retirada de Nicaragua de la Carta de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA). La decisión de Daniel Ortega y Rosario Murillo de aislar aún más a Nicaragua de la comunidad internacional demuestra su desesperación por evitar cualquier esfuerzo de la OEA o de socios afines para hacerles rendir cuentas por atroces abusos contra los derechos humanos. Sus abusos incluyen la detención injusta, la condena y el maltrato de presos políticos -incluido el obispo Rolando Álvarez-, el ataque a periodistas independientes y la obligación de cerrar o ceder al Estado cientos de organizaciones de la sociedad civil e instituciones educativas.
Las acciones de Nicaragua son una afrenta al compromiso del hemisferio occidental con la democracia. A pesar de la denuncia de Ortega y Murillo de la Carta de la OEA, Nicaragua sigue vinculada por sus obligaciones en materia de derechos humanos y gobernabilidad en virtud de los tratados e instrumentos restantes, incluida la Convención Americana sobre Derechos Humanos. Los Estados Unidos, trabajando con nuestros socios en la OEA, continúan revisando todas las herramientas disponibles y apropiadas para hacer que Ortega, Murillo y sus sustitutos rindan cuentas por sus acciones. Renovamos nuestro llamamiento a las autoridades nicaragüenses para que respeten sus obligaciones y cumplan las recomendaciones de la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos.
La OEA es la organización multilateral preeminente en el Hemisferio Occidental y tiene una larga historia de apoyo al avance democrático de todas las naciones de las Américas. Estados Unidos reitera su apoyo al pueblo de Nicaragua y a su búsqueda de las libertades fundamentales, los derechos humanos y la democracia.

Accountability for Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo Following OAS Departure
Today, Nicaragua’s withdrawal from the Organization of American States (OAS) Charter took effect. Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo’s decision to further isolate Nicaragua from the international community demonstrates their desperation to avoid any effort by the OAS or like-minded partners to hold them accountable for egregious human rights abuses. Their abuses include unjustly detaining, convicting, and mistreating political prisoners – including Bishop Rolando Alvarez; attacking independent journalists; and forcing hundreds of civil society organizations and educational institutions to close or hand over operations to the state.
Nicaragua’s actions are an affront to the Western Hemisphere’s commitment to democracy. Despite Ortega and Murillo’s denunciation of the OAS Charter, Nicaragua remains bound by its human rights and governance obligations under remaining treaties and instruments, including the American Convention on Human Rights. The United States, working with our partners in the OAS, continues to review all available and appropriate tools to hold Ortega, Murillo, and their surrogates accountable for their actions. We renew our call for the Nicaraguan authorities to uphold their obligations and fulfill the recommendations of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
The OAS serves as the preeminent multilateral organization in the Western Hemisphere and has a long history of supporting the democratic advancement of all nations in the Americas. The United States reiterates our support for the people of Nicaragua and their pursuit of fundamental freedoms, human rights, and democracy.
